BIG DIG

The Big Dig is Bostonís attempt to put the I-93 highway underground through the city. An elevated highway had been put there in 1955 as the solution to Bostonís traffic woes, but was jammed from the day they opened it. The underground tunnel was promulgated as early as 1968 and work began in 1989. It might be complete by 2005. Itís extremely cool and I like to think of the slow-motion excitement of its construction as each time I drive into the city I see a little bit more progress. More on the Big Dig can be found at: www.bigdig.com The photo here is of myself and some friends at the Big Dig at the Fort Point Channel. One day my friend Phil asked if I wanted to tour the Big Dig. I thought he had arranged an official tour, but in reality, he was suggesting we break in some early morning, and look around. We gathered this group and on a Sunday at 5AM we put on hardhats and work clothes and walked in as if we worked there. No one questioned us because no one was there. We walked in tunnels and castings and all over for hours. It was very cool. This photo is of the team on a massive crane there. Afterwards, we went to Mulís Diner for breakfast. That place is cool, highly recommended on Broadway near the St Peterís and Paulís Church condo conversion project.
